Street Pastors started in Barking and Dagenham in April 2008 with 21 volunteers. The Street Pastors are from various walks of life and churches and all of them have a keen desire to make a difference in their local community. The project in Barking and Dagenham works very closely with Police and Neighbourhood Management teams and has a strong focus around schools and neighbourhoods. An excellent Management Team has been set up to oversee the initiative with representatives from the church, police, magistrates, schools and young people serving on the Board.
The project was founded by a former local Police Officer with 25 years experience and keen to see this project work alongside other initiatives in the borough to make Barking and Dagenham a safer place to live. All those involved in the project are sure that as Street Pastors get out into the community we will see people reach their full potential and be a resource and encouragement to all who live in Barking and Dagenham.
We have fortnightly patrols in Barking and Dagenham and great teams to join. Following the riots over the summer, the need for Street Pastors continues and all the more so with the Olympics approaching. So get involved. See the vision. And see God work through ordinary people on the streets being there for others.
