A team of Street Pastors are on the streets of Worthing to help clubbers and others who are ‘out on the town at night’ to stay safe. Worthing Street Pastors began patrolling Worthing’s streets in mid January 2010.

Our scheme is an inter-denominational Church response to problems associated with young people drinking and clubbing in Worthing.  It was introduced in Worthing to the Council’s Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership and was adopted as one of the Mayor of Worthing’s charities.

We have 41 volunteers from 14 local churches who have been trained to provide the Street Pastor service. Our service is managed around 8 teams but only one team out every night - currently Fridays and Saturdays. On the night 4 patrol the streets and 2 pray back at the base between the hours of 10pm and 4.30am.

Worthing Street Pastors engage with young people out on the streets, provide a listening ear and offer practical help where needed. We work in close partnership with existing groups such as the Pub Watch team (formed by pub and club managers), as well as the police, the council, the security door staff, taxi marshals and other local services.

Typical problems for us are helping people who have lost their money or have been robbed to get home safely, calling taxis, helping people find their friends, providing water and/or basic first aid to the last drinkers of the night. We provide blankets or warm drinks to those who are cold and may have had too much to drink. We also offer flip flops to lady clubbers who have lost their shoes or who are tottering about in ‘fashionable’ footwear.

In our distinctive blue beanie hats or baseball caps and bright blue jackets emblazoned with ‘Street Pastor’, our teams are easy to spot and we are becoming a popular and effective part of the night time economy.
