Celebrating 2 years of service
Street Pastors have been operating in Southampton City Centre on Friday and Saturday nights since May 2009, going on duty to care, listen, and help from 10pm to 4am. Our trained volunteers are formed into 12 teams, each going on duty once per month. They are all members of local churches (so far 35 churches are involved).
When on patrol they make the streets safer by removing bottles and broken glass and being available to anyone who needs help. This includes giving directions, administering basic first aid, being a listening ear when someone is upset and helping drunk people find a way to get home safely.
We operate in partnership with the door staff, police, council, ambulance service and door staff and are actively involved with the Safe City Partnership. During the course of the night the team will typically get several calls to help from CCTV, door staff, police, taxi marshals, or the ICE bus. These colleagues say they really miss us on the rare occasions we are not on duty.
Our prayer team is a highly valued part of the work we do. They are on duty at our street pastor base for all the time that we are on the streets, providing specific prayer support during the night.
In May 2011 we celebrated 2 years of service. See the 2 Year summary attached.
School Pastors We are now recruiting for SCHOOL pastors. Two schools in the city have signed up to be part of our pilot scheme in Southampton. Where Street Pastors has responded to the needs of the community on the streets at night, School Pastors aims to respond to the needs of the school community in the locality of specific partner schools. Closing date for applications 2nd September 2011.
