New faces could soon be appearing on the streets of Harlow to help steer people away from harm and address social concerns as part of a street pastor scheme.

Street pastors are church leaders, ministers or members of the church with a concern for society, in particular young people who may feel excluded and marginalised. They are individuals who are willing to engage with people on the streets, in pubs, clubs or at parties.

Street pastors will also be willing to work with their church, community leaders and agencies on projects to look at collaborative ways of working on issues that may affect the community.

Street Pastors are already a familiar sight in other areas of Essex on the weekend nightlife scene. They are acknowledged as a force for good, not only by people socialising in pubs and clubs, but also by the police, CCTV authorities and pub and club owners. Local authorities in Chelmsford have commented that since the scheme started in their area, there has been a significant drop in the level of anti-social behaviour on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Sgt Chris Gould said “Street pastors add extra eyes and ears in our community. They are individuals who care about what happens in our society and who are willing to engage with local people to look at ways to resolve any issues by liaising with the church, local community leaders and with partner agencies.

“They hope to build up trust and earn credibility by listening, caring and helping people on our streets in a practical, unconditional way and we, the police, fully support them in their mission.”
